Nothing in life's a coincidence. That's why running a bed-and-breakfast seemed a natural extension of my Arizona lifestyle; a lifestyle far different from the abuse which forced me to flee Washington State in fear for my life.
In 1991, when my future husband and I moved to a house with land and room to roam, I hoped that the time to rebuild my life could begin. What I hadn't anticipated were the ghosts and spirits who also lived on the land and occupied the house. I tried to ignore them and thought I was being successful until the arrival of one particular bed-and-breakfast guest. She was not the usual type of guest. Though I'd been forewarned about her being a witch, she didn't look like any witch I'd ever imagined. Shirl had no nose warts, she wasn't wearing a black cape and black pointy hat, and she wasn't casting a spell or stirring a boiling cauldron of eye of newt soup. Neither did she look like Elizabeth Montgomery.
Shirl was a witch and a follower of Wicca, which was once known as “The Craft of the Wise.” She liked being called a Wiccan, witch, or white witch, as opposed to psychic, clairvoyant, medium, or channel because Wicca can trace its roots to the ancient herbal medicines that were used for healings and her healing power was the gift she considered most precious.
She brought with her a warning—for me. With her steely gray eyes boring into mine she said that nothing had occurred in my life without a purpose and that I had no choice in what I was to become. I know Shirl enjoyed the conundrum she had created in me with that greeting. In spite of feeling affronted at her brashness, I braced myself against what I was sensing: that I was going to be helpless in preventing this healer, teacher, and protector of all things from facilitating changes in my life that I had never imagined.
Follow the author as she embarks on her journey of spiritual awakening and is introduced to her Spirit Guides and The Other Side.
